Workshop Description

Europe – like the whole world – is facing increasing numbers of refugees. 2015 was a crucial year in that context. As integration and participation are key factors in order to provide social stability, new strategies of refugee employment are required. The workshop targets participants who would like to develop new ideas about how refugees can be included in gainful activities within existing local legal standards. magdas HOTEL in Vienna/Austria serves as inspiration and as an example of implemented refugee-employment social business idea. Focusing social business as a self-sustainable (partial) solution to a problem in society, the desired outcomes are several (3-4) ideas developed in groups,  and presented to the auditory of the workshop with the Business Model Canvas tool.

magdas, an 100 percent affiliate of Caritas Vienna, was founded in 2012 with the aim of creating new job opportunities for people living in poverty with no or lower chances of getting a job. Run as a social business, magdas  tries to solve social and economic problems with entrepreneurial tools. magdas functions like every other company, just that the focus is not  maximization of profit, but  maximization of societal benefits and humanity. Target groups are long term unemployed people, migrants, refugees and people with disabilities. The job initiatives of magdas social business are focusing on the strength of  people rather than their problems.  magdas comprises projects from a design hotel run by former refugees in co-operation with hotel experts to a recycling enterprise recycling yearly almost half a million mobile phones.
